When the rights to Veronica Roth’s new novel “Divergent” was purchased, in was in the midst of the young adult phenomenon. “Harry Potter” had just wrapped, “Twilight” was going strong, and the “Hunger Games” was poised for greatness. By the time the film was ready to be released, however, the young adult genre was over-saturated and well past its heyday. Yet “Divergent” may be the film that injects some life into the faltering genre.
After “Thor: The Dark World” topped the box office for two straight weeks, it was time for its blockbuster competition, “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” to show up.
And show up it did. With a budget estimated at $50 million more than the franchise starter “The Hunger Games,” this second installment upped the ante for effects and suspense.
With its predecessor, the 2010 “Clash of the Titans” topping $160 million from its U.S. box office, “Wrath of the Titans” is looking to capitalize on the still popular Greek myth genre.
The film follows the widowed Perseus, the demi-god son of Zeus as he raises his son in a world where the gods rule is waning. When Zeus comes to him for assistance, he must once again arm himself for a battle much bigger than himself. Continue reading “Wrath of the Titans”
The newest movie adaptation of a young adult book was released over spring break. “The Hunger Games” opened to an amazing $19.7 million in midnight shows alone, and went on to win the weekend box office with a whopping $152.5 million domestically making it the third highest opening ever (trailing “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2” and “The Dark Knight”) and the highest opening ever for a non-sequel. It beat out every “Twilight” installment, as it was able to draw in the male audience the “Twilight” movies have been sorely lacking.
The story follows Katniss Everdeen, as she goes from District 12’s resident huntress to national icon as a participant in the 74th Annual Hunger Games. Continue reading “The Hunger Games”
